So instead of hiking in the morning we decide to just take in the sights again back at Barkhor Square. It's such a melting pot of different Tibetans -- Kham, and Ando have different clothing and hairstyles. Some of the women wear their hair in multiple very long braids. To get that length they must have been growing their hair their whole lives. They gather all the braids at the end and make this intricate knot which is decorated by colorful hair jewelery. Other women weave brightly-colored yarn in their hair. We think it's the Kham men who wear the red scarves in their hair and weave red yarn into their hair -- they also wear turquoise earrings. Turquoise and coral are the big gemstones in Tibetan culture -- men and women wear it and they also incorporate the stones in their prayer beads and prayer wheels. We didn't notice this yesterday, but today we saw that there are video cameras around the Barkhor square apparently there have been skirmishes (some deadly) between the Chinese and Tibetans in the plaza area. In addition to the cameras there are also scores of Chinese soldiers and police in the area -- most of them look extremely bored -- we saw one napping. I guess to ...
